The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) is the professional, scientific, and credentialing association for over 135,000 speech-language pathologists (SLPs), audiologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists in the United States and internationally. Our mission is to empower and support our members by advocating on behalf of persons with communication disorders, advance communication science, and promote effective human communication.
SLPs work with children in school settings to address communication problems that affect children’s success in classroom activities, social interaction, literacy, and learning. They work to combine students’ communication goals with academic and social goals by integrating classroom objectives into speech and language activities.
Educational audiologists support children with hearing loss and auditory processing disorders in accessing classroom curricula. They provide assessment and intervention services including the fitting and maintenance of technology such as, hearing aids, personal FM and soundfield systems; counseling and guidance to support teachers and parents; and assessment and management of classroom acoustics.
